The Making of the Fendi SS17 Window Display

One of my favorite things to do while I lived in Paris was to wander around the fashion district of the golden triangle looking at the window displays.  The magnificent dazzling eye candy could make any dull Paris day seem brighter.  From the clothes on display to the stories told by the windows, I could spend hours looking at the beautiful displays. I came across this short video (posted below) of the making of the Fendi SS17 Window by artist Anke Eilergerhard and just had t

    Chanel Métiers d’Art Salzburg 2014/15

Every year, Karl Lagerfeld hosts an amazing fashion show called Métiers d’Art which showcases the work of Chanel’s atelier houses.  This year, the show was held in Salzburg.  Since studying at the Lesage embroidery house myself, I have become increasingly interested in the traditional atelier houses that service the Haute Couture industry.  As the traditional craftsmanship is dying and many atelier houses are slowly disappearing, Chanel have been buying the companies to prese

    Haute Couture Swiss Textiles

Last week I came across this wonderful video of Swiss textile manufacturing company Jakob Schlaepfer.  They are an amazing company keeping the textile craft alive for the past 50 years, and are still supplying the fashion world with many magical creations.  Imagine a material as soft, sheer and delicate as a soap bubble, or a fabric with woven copper threads to create a sculptural effect.  This unique company experiments with new and innovative textile techniques to create on

A Visit to Flower Maker Legeron

One of the best parts about living in France is getting to visit some of the most incredible craft atelier houses still creating handmade pieces for the world of fashion.  I have always wanted to visit Legeron and buy some flowers for my work, so I finally made time go into Paris and visit this wonderful atelier.  Legeron is a flower maker started in 1880 and has managed to stay in the hands of the same family and is still run today by Bruno, the founder’s great grandson.  I

    The Embroidery of Chanel Couture

Once again I am in awe at the impressive embroidery produced by “les petites mains” in the Lesage atelier for the house of Chanel Fall Winter 2014/2015 collection.  The craftsmanship never disappoints, and seems to always be creating new innovative ways to stay relevant in today’s fashion.   This video shows the way the artisans make beads mimic the traditional Chanel tweed, and how the layered sequins create a beautiful 3D effect.  Karl Lagerfeld always stays true to his ate

    Fleur de Lis Painted Decorations

I am currently going through a white phase, so I needed some new white pieces to include in my decor.  In keeping with my French obsession I also wanted something related to France/French decorations.  While at an antique market, I came across these wonderful fleur de lis finials and thought they would make great ornaments if I painted them.  You can find finials at almost every antique or flea market for about $4/each. Step #1: Clean finials with a scrubbing brush or sponge

    François Lesage 1929 – 2011

December 1, 2011 was a sad day for those in the fashion industry. Master of Couture embroidery, François Lesage, aged 82 passed away after a long battle with illness. M. Lesage was a true visionary in the fashion industry. Tucked away in the attic rooms of a five story building, overlooked by Sacre Coeur, you will find Lesage, Europe’s most celebrated beadwork and embroidery house. These tiny rooms hold drawers and boxes filled with more than 60 tons of beads, sequins, thread

    L’Aiguille en Fete 2011

Lace was the theme at this years L’aiguille En Fete show that I eagerly attended on Saturday. This is my second year going to this needlework trade show, where booths are lined with premium threads, buttons, fabrics and the latest in sewing and embroidery machines. I went to find supplies for my hand embroidery work, and came home with sparkling metallic threads, shiny sequins and pretty buttons! Apart from the bustling stalls selling their goods, there is always some sort of

    Market Day Trip

Well today I decided to check out marché aligre to see what treasures I could find. All of the tour books say that it is a great market for fruits and veggies, and collectibles. I decided to walk there instead of take the metro, so I could window shop along the way. I found myself in Place des Vosges, which was the home of Victor Hugo. It had just started snowing again as I walked into the park to take this photo. As I left the park, I ended up getting lost and turning down
