Anna Piaggi Remembered (March 1931 – August 2012)

Vogue Italia fashion contributor Anna Piaggi past away last week in her Milan home. She was 81 years old.  Anna was a regular attendee at Fashion Week and one of the front row’s most distinguishable faces.  She was known as a true style icon always wearing a wardrobe full of flamboyant, vibrant clothes including many Haute Couture pieces.  Her signature dyed-blue hair always fell over one eye while her lips, eyes and cheeks were painted in bright colors.

In 2006 the Victoria and Albert Museum of London showcased a flamboyant selection of Piaggi’s complete outfits, “Anna Piaggi: Fashion-ology”: 2,865 dresses, 265 pair of shoes, 932 hats, 24 aprons, 31 fur and feathers boas, marking her legacy of state-of-the-art fashion.  She was a true fashion icon, dressing not to impress, but dressing in what she liked no matter the place or occasion.  She created beauty in the unexpected.  Many critics say she paved the way for other fashion risk takers such as Anna Dello Russo and Lady Gaga.

Many of those in the fashion world who knew Anna, are taking to social media to express their memories of the late Fashion icon showing that she was truly admired in the Fashion community.  Anna was loved for taking risks and opening up a rainbow of inspirations for designers around the world.  Donatella Versace spoke to American Vogue about Anna.  “She was a visionary with a heart of gold. The world is a little less colorful without her.”
